From wild exultation to the deepest pathos
Andrew Lorenz (violin), David Pereira (cello), Wendy Lorenz (piano), Michelle Higgs (viola) and some of Canberra’s most exciting young artists invite you to an intimate evening of Czech music.
Pianist and concert producer Wendy Lorenz says the music being performed for Bohemian Serenade is full of glorious melodic lines and catchy dance rhythms inspired by traditional Czech folk culture.
“The fresh vivacious melodies of the tunes combined with folk inspired rhythms give the music its unique flavour.”
“The listener is transported from moments of wild exultation to the deepest pathos,” Ms. Lorenz says.
Bohemian Serenade program includes works such as Dvorak’s New World Symphony and Smetana’s Moldau, some of the best-known works in the classical repertoire.
“We chose the pieces because they capture the unique Bohemian Czech flavour. We’ll play some of the best-known works by arguably the three best-known Czech composers: Dvorak, Smetana and Janacek.”
“Dvorak’s featured work – Dvorak’s Piano Quartet in Eb has been a long time a favourite of ours and is always popular with audiences,” Lorenz said.
The term “Bohemia” is synonymous with “Czech” and was the historical name that loosely described much of the area now known as the Czech Republic.
“A large region situated in the western part of the current Czech Republic is still referred to as Bohemia. Serenade captures the very melodic and song-like nature of much of the program – hence Bohemian Serenade,” Ms. Lorenz said.
The concert is at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre on Sunday 26 April from 5pm.
